PARGA
A harbour town on the Greek mainland Parga, dominated by its 18th century Venetian Castle and pretty colourful houses, is much loved as a beautiful holiday resort. It might not count as an island, but it’s easy to include in any island-hopping itinerary around the Ionian. It also has a range of spectacular sandy beaches along its Dalmatian style coastline if you want to fly-and-flop for a week or two.
If you’re sailing in the area, Parga is well located for other Ionian islands and is a civilised and cosmopolitan place to visit for a night, with a good harbour and lively waterfront with traditional tavernas. If you don’t have a boat Parga is easy to get to in summer by flying into the airport at Preveza-Aktion and catching a bus or a cab (it’s about an hour’s journey by road).
Being on the mainland gives Parga a certain richness you don’t always find on the islands. You’ll find it slightly more ‘grown up’ and well-resourced which, in the middle of an adventure can come as a welcome break and chance to catch your breath.
Our recommendation: other than the castle there’s no great cultural history here, but it’s just a really pleasant and well-kept holiday resort that attracts Greeks and travellers from across Europe alike. The beaches are accessible, the waters are lovely, and you have a wide choice of restaurants – what’s not to like?
