A hidden gem Folegandros sits at seven o’clock on the Cycladic watch face, looking towards Crete far to the south. A tiny island, with a population of less than 800 distributed between 3 villages, it is a small and perfectly formed microcosm of everything a hideaway Aegean island should be – a place of great and relatively untouched natural beauty.
Let’s be honest, there’s not a lot to do here other than wonder at the picture-perfect postcard views of the narrow colourful alleyways and the rather lovely church at Panagia. Then watch the sun go down whilst sipping a chilled drink in the main town of Chora whilst envisioning what the island would have been like only 30 or 40 years ago?
But whatever you do, if you’re island-hopping in these parts, don’t miss it. It’s charming and romantic and definitely one of the places you’ll talk about and remember when you get home. It’s the complete antithesis of its nearby cosmopolitan neighbour Santorini.
Our recommendation: Well worth the effort to come to the outer ring of the Cyclades. You’ll land or moor up at the small harbour in Karavostasis and the island has a really tranquil and romantic vibe.
