SERIFOS

Ask most Aegean travel experts and the three words you will find most closely associated with Serifos are ‘authentic island Greece’. In most respects you can take ‘authentic’ to mean a combination of ‘unsophisticated’ and ‘not a lot to do’, and it’s certainly one of the less visited, yet to be discovered, islands in the Cyclades. Livadi is the main harbour and mooring point. Chora is the hilltop capital with some rather lovely views. Both are old-school Greek villages with places to stay and eat. There are some very nice beaches  

Then again there’s a certain romance and beauty in an absence of loud bars and clubs. Serifos is not so much somewhere to get away from it all as a place where you can get away from all of it! It’s the sort of lifestyle where you sit and write poetry or take your watercolours to paint landscapes and seascapes in a straw hat, sipping at a glass of ouzo, wondering whether to have fish or souvlaki for dinner. 

Our recommendation: if you’re sailing in the area you should at least call in for lunch although it’s so naturally charming that an overnight and a wander up the hill to Chora makes excellent sense. Of course, if you want to write poetry or paint watercolours over a glass of ouzo then the sky’s the limit.
